Life as an intern: Week 8

This week was more research and calculations. I was looking forward to the calculations as I was doing research for almost 2 weeks. But sadly, we didn't manage to calculate much.

ERLANG A,B & C

Erlang is a general-purpose concurrent programming language and runtime system. The sequential subset of Erlang is a functional language, with strict evaluation, single assignment, and dynamic typing. For concurrency it follows the Actor model. It was designed by Ericsson to support distributed, fault-tolerant, soft-real-time, non-stop applications. The first version was developed by Joe Armstrong in 1986. It supports hot swapping thus code can be changed without stopping a system. Erlang was originally a proprietary language within Ericsson, but was released as open source in 1998. While threads are considered a complicated and error-prone topic in most languages, Erlang provides language-level features for creating and managing processes with the aim of simplifying concurrent programming. Though all concurrency is explicit in Erlang, processes communicate using message passing instead of shared variables, which removes the need for locks.

Erlang B can determine the number of trunks, or lines, needed to handle a calling load during a one-hour period. However, the formula assumes that lost calls are cleared; i.e., if callers get a busy signal, they will never retry. This assumption means that Erlang B can underestimate the number of trunks needed. For this reason, it is best used in situations with few busy signals. The Erlang B Extended formula takes into account the callers who will immediately retry if their calls do not go through.

Erlang-B (sometimes also written without the hyphen Erlang B), also known as the Erlang loss formula, is a formula for the blocking probability derived from the Erlang distribution to describe the probability of call loss on a group of circuits (in a circuit switched network, or equivalent). It is, for example, used in planning telephone networks. The formula was derived by Agner Krarup Erlang and is not limited to telephone networks, since it describes a probability in a queuing system (albeit a special case with a number of servers but no buffer spaces for incoming calls to wait for a free server). Hence, the formula is also used in certain inventory systems with lost sales.

formula for Erlang B

Erlang C is a traffic modeling formula used in call center scheduling to calculate delays or predict waiting times for callers. Erlang C bases its formula on three factors: the number of reps providing service; the number of callers waiting; and the average amount of time it takes to serve each caller. Erlang C can also calculate the resources that will be needed to keep wait times within the call center's target limits. This method assumes that there are no lost calls or busy signals, and therefore may overestimate the staff that is required.

The Erlang C distribution is used for dimensioning server pools where requests for service wait on a first in, first out (FIFO) queue until an idle server is available. It is based on the following assumptions:
  • There are an infinite number of sources;
  • Calls arrive at random;
  • Calls are served in order of arrival;
  • Blocked calls are delayed; and
  • Holding times are exponentially distributed.
The Erlang C formula is used to predict the probability that a call will be delayed, and can be used to predict the probability that a call will be delayed more than a certain time. From that other key queue performance metrics can be calculated. The Erlang C formula is:

On The Wings Of Love

Just smile for me and let the day begin
You are the sunshine that lights my heat within
I'm sure that you're an angel in disguise
Come take my hand and together we will rise

On the wings of love
Up and above the clouds
The only way to fly
Is on the wings of love
On the wings of love
Only the two of us
Together flying high
Flying high Upon the wings of love

You look at me and I begin to melt
Just like the snow when a ray of sun is felt
I'm crazy bout ya baby can't you see
I'd be delighted if you could come with me

On the wings of love
Up and above the clouds
The only way to fly
Is on the wings of love
On the wings of love
Only the two of us
Together flying high
Flying high Upon the wings of love

Yes you belong to me
I'm yours exclusively
Right now we live and breathe Each other
Insepreble it seems,
We're flowing like a stream
Running free flowing
On the wings of love

On the wings of love
Up and above the clouds
The only way to fly
Is on the wings of love
On the wings of love
Only the two of us
Together flying high
Together flying high

On the wings of love
Up and above the clouds
The only way to fly
Is on the wings of love
On the wings of love
Only the two of us
Together flying high
Together flying high
Upon the wings of love

hope u all enjoyed the song :)

Life as an intern: Week 7

a week in front of the computer

This week i was asked to search for the details of text-to-speech and speech-to-text plug-ins. I was given a template with various details needed. Some of the details were supplier name, best virtual person, integration with vendor products, integration with custom 3rd party application, product summary and Url. For this task, we were allowed to work in group. *big smiles*

Below are a few of the suppliers I have found:

  •  Nuance
  • IBM
  • Philips
  • Lumen Vox
  • Amcom Software
  • Sensory
Second half of the week, I was ask to research on contact center vendors. Many contact centers are heavy users of communications technology. Premise-based are the traditional equipments and software you need to install in the office. Hosted are those which you do not need to buy, just need to subscribe.

Below are the list of Premise-Based contact center vendors:
  • Stratasoft
  • Vertical Networks
  • Avaya
  • Cisco
  • Zeacom
Below are the list of Hosted contact center vendors:
  • Eagle ACD
  • Five9
  • LivePerson
  • Envox Worldwide
  • Kunnect
wondering what's premise-based and hosted contact centers? I hope the diagram below helps.

Life as an intern: Week 6

its research again :(

1st topic: Text to Speech (TTS)

TTS is the ability of the operating system to play back printed text as spoken words. An internal driver, called a TTS engine, recognizes the text and using a synthesized voice chosen from several pre-generated voices, speaks the written text. A TTS engine is installed with the operating system. Additional engines are also available through third-party manufacturers. These engines often use a certain jargon or vocabulary; for example, a vocabulary specializing in medical or legal terminology. They can also use different voices allowing for regional accents such as British English, or speak a different language altogether such as German, French, or Russian.

To determine the selected Text-to-Speech voice, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Speech.
    On the
Text-to-Speech tab, the displayed name in the Voice selection drop-down list is the currently active voice.
  2. Click Preview Voice to hear the active voice. The text is spoken and the words are highlighted as they are spoken.
To preview the Text-to-Speech voice, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Speech.
    On the
Text-to-Speech tab, the displayed name in the Voice selection drop-down list is the active voice.
  2. Click Preview Voice to hear the currently selected voice. The text is spoken and the words are highlighted as they are spoken.
  3. During playback, Preview Voice will change to Stop. Click Stop to interrupt the voice playback.

2nd topic: Speech to Text

Speech recognition is the process of converting an acoustic signal, captured by a microphone or a telephone, to a set of words. The recognized words can be the final results, as for applications such as commands & control, data entry, and document preparation. They can also serve as the input to further linguistic processing in order to achieve speech understanding.

Speech recognition systems can be characterized by many parameters. An isolated-word speech recognition system requires that the speaker pause briefly between words, whereas a continuous speech recognition system does not. Spontaneous, or extemporaneously generated, speech contains disfluencies, and is much more difficult to recognize than speech read from script. Some systems require speaker enrollment - a user must provide samples of his or her speech before using them, whereas other systems are said to be speaker-independent, in that no enrollment is necessary. Some of the other parameters depend on the specific task. Recognition is generally more difficult when vocabularies are large or have many similar-sounding words. When speech is produced in a sequence of words, language models or artificial grammars are used to restrict the combination of words.

3rd topic: Predictive dialing

Predictive dialing uses a computer-based system that automatically dials groups of telephone numbers, and then passes calls to available operators or agents in a calling center once the calls are connected. The most common use of predictive dialing is in call centers which make large amounts of calls, such as those run by telemarketing companies. Predictive dialing was introduced for the purpose of increasing efficiency within calling centers. Prior to its development, most call centers used devices known as auto dialers, which were merely computers equipped with telephony boards that could dial a number without a caller having to manually enter it on a keypad. Predictive dialing is far more advanced than using an auto dialer because it monitors calls made to see how they are answered. If the call goes unanswered, is met with a busy signal or answering machine, or reaches a fax machine, the predictive dialer immediately ends the call. Only calls that are answered by a live person are put through to an operator. Therefore, productivity is increased because callers do not have to listen to unanswered calls or wait for someone to pick up. Predictive dialing is so named because it predicts when callers will become available to take a new call, and dials calls in advance.
